2021-03-13 · The Master Watershed Steward Program builds local capacity for protecting watersheds by educating and empowering volunteers across the Commonwealth. The program has over 500 participants in 20 counties, who have collectively contributed over 50,000 volunteer hours improving Pennsylvania watersheds.
As of August 2018, there were 312 Master Watershed Stewards in 12 counties in Pennsylvania working with dozens of conservation partners. Master Watershed Stewards have collectively contributed over 50,000 volunteer hours improving Pennsylvania watersheds. The program provides participants with extensive training in environmental science, followed by ongoing volunteer and educational opportunities that allow participants to make a difference in their communities.
Master Watershed Stewards are also busy completing on-the-ground restoration projects such as rain gardens, riparian buffers, stream clean-ups, bioswales and more. York County has trained five classes of Master Watershed Stewards and will be training a new class in March 2021.

The NY Master Watershed Steward (MWS) program empowers watershed professionals and volunteers to be leaders in their communities and to promote healthy watersheds through increased awareness, understanding, and knowledge about the function of watersheds, potential impairments, and watershed protection strategies. The Master Watershed Steward program was created by Penn State Extension to “educate and empower volunteers” to work in the community to educate and advocate for environmental conservation. Watershed Stewards can do a lot of things, such as lead cleanups, conduct water sampling, and organize and lead educational workshops.
